ISO 50001 – Energy management systems
Effective Energy Management Systems (EnMS) help your organization to establish processes to improve energy performance. Implementation should reduce your energy costs, carbon emissions and other environmental impacts.
ISO 50001, the Energy Management standard, establishes an international framework for the use and consumption of energy in industrial, commercial and institutional organizations.
This standard shares many clauses with ISO 14001 and other standards, which makes it integration into existing management systems simple
ISO 50001:2011 provides a framework of requirements for organizations to:
- Develop a policy for more efficient use of energy
- Fix targets and objectives to meet the policy
- Use data to better understand and make decisions about energy use
- Measure the results
- Review how well the policy works, and
- Continually improve energy management.
Our experience demonstrates that organizations that already have Environmental Management Systems (EMS) in place improve their energy performance by applying the requirements of ISO 50001.
The implementation of an ISO 50001 compliant energy management system involves the development of an Energy Review, Energy Baseline, Energy Performance Indicators and of monitoring and measurement practices, among other procedures. These constitute valuable tools to manage and improve your energy performance.
Like other ISO management system standards, certification to ISO 50001 is possible but not obligatory. Some organizations decide to implement the standard solely for the benefits it provides. Others decide to get certified to it, to show external parties they have implemented an energy management system.
